The USA played their first match under new manager Jurgen Klinsmann on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. It was a friendly match against Mexico that resulted in a 1-1 draw. So, how was Klinsmann debut as manager? Below are some of my thoughts from the match.

Thoughts On USA’s 1-1 Draw With Mexico

1. Way Too Early To Draw Any Conclusion - For those who are wanting to see this match as a success of failure, it’s way too early. Will anyone care about how the USA did in a friendly three years from now after the 2014 World Cup? Probably not because it is a friendly and not the ultimate goal. Jurgen Klinsmann has only been in charge for one match and only time will tell if he’s successful.
2. Landon Donovan Should Be The Center Of Attack - In the second half as Donovan was allowed more freedom in the attack, it helped to turn the momentum and create chances. He’s not in the same level as players like Lionel Messi or Wayne Rooney but is just as important to the USA asthose players are to their national teams. The attacking formation should be built around Donovan, just as Mexico has done with Javier Hernandez.
3. Slow Starts - Once again the United States started off slowly and had to come from behind to get a result. It was a problem under Bob Bradley and is something that Klinsmann will have to address if he wants to be successful. On Wednesday night, the USA showed fight in the second half but there’s only so many times they can afford to concede early goals.
4. Best Central Midfield Pairing Unknown - Jermaine Jones, who some thought would be the answer in CM, has failed to establish himself the best option. Kyle Beckerman, who had most of the defensive responsibility, showed against Mexico that he’s another option. He still could start in 2014 but with Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu, and Beckerman available, it seems that Jones could be the odd man out. Michael Bradley has consistently proven his quality at this position so there’s really only one spot available for those four players (most likely to be Edu or Holden).
5. Roster Will Change Often - With no meaningful matches (World Cup Qualifying) until next year, it’s safe to say that Klinsmann will use the time to give several different players an opportunity. The friendlies in September will likely see more European based players while matches in the winter months could be used for players based in North America. Klinsmann showed in his roster for this match that he’s not afraid to call up players who haven’t had caps in years.
6. Reason For Optimism - Even though Mexico outclassed the USA in the 2011 Gold Cup final, there’s reason to be optimistic for the next World Cup cycle. Klinsmann brings in new energy, ideas, and a more attacking style of play. The result might not have been impress on Wednesday but there were positive signs and there’s plenty of time to improve by the 2014 World Cup.
