FC Barcelona has one again defeated their rivals Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory at the Bernabeu in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals 1st leg. Real Madrid have a lead in La Liga but will this result possibly turn the tide. Below are three thoughts on Wednesday’s match and the possible implications for the rest of the Spanish season.

  1. FC Barcelona Are In Real Madrid’s Head - Barca have dominated the rivalry in recent years with Real Madrid only winning once since May 2008. Not only have Barcelona been the better side but they’ve embarassed Real on several occasions. The worst being a 5-0 win last season where Real Madrid were played off the pitch from the start. It’s clear that Barcelona have confidence playing in the El Clasico even at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. This was clearly evident on Wednesday as they went down 1-0 but were able to score two unanswered second half goals. Some thought Real Madrid might have gotten over the hump with last season’s Copa del Rey win over Barcelona but this season has shown that isn’t the case, at least not yet.
  2. Real Madrid May Have Lost Battle But Can Win The War - It’s a disappointing loss for Real Madrid but it was only the first leg. They are more than capable of getting a win at the Nou Camp but more importantly they still have a solid lead in La Liga. While the Copa del Rey is still considered a prestigious competition in Spain, Real Madrid would rather win La Liga. The 2-1 deficit heading into the second leg will put less pressure on Real Madrid as few will expect them to get a victory or even get a draw. They can head into the match knowing that there’s not much to lose and La Liga is their main focus domestically.
  3. FC Barcelona & Real Madrid Are Two Best Teams In The World - It’s pretty safe to say that these two teams are a step above everyone else. Manchester City could make an argument but their struggles in the UEFA Champions League (knocked out and in Europa League) makes it difficult. Bayern Munich is probably the closest to these two but still not quite the same level. While it might not happen due to the draw (has yet to be determined), Barca and Real could meet in the Champions League final. Another reason these two sides can be considered the best is they have the top two players in the world. For Barcelona it’s the reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi, who some think could end up being the greatest of all time. Not to be outdone, Real Madrid have Cristiano Ronaldo, who set scoring records last season (40 goals in La Liga), and has also won several individual awards.

FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has once again won the FIFA Ballon d’or, which is awarded to the top player. Messi, who led Barcelona to the La Liga and UEFA Champions League trophies, was the clear favorite heading into today’s ceremony. Cristiano Ronaldo finished 2nd to Messi while teammate Xavi Hernandez finished third in voting for the second straight year.

It wasn’t a total success for Messi in 2011 as Argentina struggled in the Copa America and Barcelona lost

The voting was not that close with Messi receiving almost half all votes.

Leo Messi: 47,88%
Cristiano Ronaldo: 21,6%
Xavi: 9,23%

Messi stated in his acceptance speech that credit should be given to his teammates including Xavi.

“Xavi, this Ballon d’Or is yours as well”

“We’ve shared this moment for four years. This Ballon d’Or is also yours (Xavi). Without your help I would not be here.”

The Ballon d’Or was first awarded in 1956 and changed to the FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2010. It originally was only available to European players on European clubs but has recently been opened up any player. Messi is now tied with Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, and Michel Platini.

Messi is only 24 and at this point could end up winning many more Ballon d’Or trophies.

It was a year of good and bad for the beautiful game. As 2012 nears, it’s time to reflect on this past year in the world of soccer. Who was the best player, best team, and what other moments were important? Below is my list of awards in soccer world for 2011.

Best Moment – Japan Wins Women’s World Cup

The final against the USA was a great match and there were numerous memorable moments throughout the tournament but what made this was the situation in Japan. Only months earlier, a Earthquake and Tsunami devastated the country which resulted in thousands of deaths. The Men’s National Team, scheduled to play in the 2011 Copa America, decided to withdraw from the competition. While it is only a sporting event, the win for Japan gave their country something positive and showed the effect soccer can have in society.

Best Player - Lionel Messi

The Spanish side won the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, FIFA Club World Cup, Spanish Super Cup,  and UEFA Super Cup. The roster is full of world class talent like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Fabregas, Pique, Puyol, and Dani Alves. The only question about this team is how long can they continue to be dominant and are Real Madrid the only team capable of knocking them off.

Best Transfer - Sergio Aguero

The Argentine has made Manchester City supporters forget about the drama of Carlos Tevez. Aguero has been an instant success with 13 goals through his first 17 EPL matches. While Man City did pay a significant price for Aguero, he’s only 23 and arguably one of the top 5 strikers playing today. He also allows City to move Carlos Tevez without fear that they’ll be lacking goal scoring.

Best Free Transfer - Demba Ba

The Newcastle United striker was available for free from West Ham after they were relegated to the Championship. He’s proven to be a top notch scorer who has helped led Newcastle to a strong first half in the EPL. If he continues to score goals for Newcastle, expect one of the top clubs in the Premier League to make a transfer offer. Ba is second in EPL scoring with 14 goals through 17 matches, second only to Robin Van Persie.

As soon as the 2011 Major League Soccer season finished, the speculation of David Beckham’s future began to run rampant. The French press have falsely stated he’s already signed with Paris Saint-Germain and was supposed to be in Paris last weekend. Beckham’s management team has responded to these reports stating that a decision has not been made.

The only certainty for now is that Beckham will be playing for PSG or the LA Galaxy. After a rocky start to his time in LA, Beckham has settle in during the last few seasons and finished the 2011 season by winning MLS Cup. He’s recovered from injuries and backlash from Galaxy supporters (decision to go on loan to AC Milan) to being one of the top midfielders in MLS.

It seems that most think Beckham is more likely to sign with PSG but the Galaxy have made an offer. Below I’ve outlined the reasons for Beckham signing for either side.

Paris Saint-Germain

  • Money - It’s clear that PSG Will offer more money than the Galaxy. The reports have the deal at $18 million for 18 months. Beckham makes more off the pitch than on it but there’s no denying that money always plays some role.
  • Champions League - Another reason for Beckham to play in Paris would be the chance of returning to the UEFA Champions League. PSG are currently at the top of the French Ligue 1 table and are a strong bet to finish in the top 3. This would be Beckham’s last good chance to play in a top European league and he could cap his career by playing in the top club competition in the world.
  • 2012 Olympics - Beckham would improve his chances to play for the Great Britain team if he’s a regular contributor in a top league. While MLS is improving, it’s still not considered the level of Ligue 1. If Beckham is successful at PSG, it would make his inclusion in the GB Olympic roster extremely likely.

LA Galaxy

  • 2012 Olympics - This is a reason for the Galaxy as he could stay match fit leading up to the tournament. The MLS season runs from March-November where as in France the season would end in May. The Olympic tournament begins in late July so staying in MLS could give him an extra month or so of matches to get fit. Also, the Galaxy would not have any issue letting Beckham leave for the time to play in the Olympics where this would coincide with the start of the Ligue 1 season in France.
  • Family - Beckham and his family has settled in Los Angeles. Going overseas to play for PSG would likely mean uprooting all that and starting over in Paris for 18 months. If the decision was purely based on his family, you would think that the Galaxy would have the edge over Paris.
  • Future After Playing - Beckham has talked about his interest in becoming an owner after his playing days are over. Staying with the Galaxy would make it a seamless transition into the front office of a new MLS franchise. It’s also possible that he could stay with the Galaxy and move towards being a coach/manager or General Manager type position. As with the reason above, staying in Los Angeles makes all this a lot easier than moving back and forth between Paris in an 18 month span.

One thing is for sure and that is that reports shouldn’t be trusted until it’s confirmed by Beckham.
